francophones commeGingras,
Pinsonnault, Labelle, Roy et Lessard
(Hamelin est en fait Nathaniel Hemlin). Le jeu
semble avoir connu une popularité soudaine
moussée par un trophée donné par un dénommé
Horn de New York.

June 8th (Montreal Star): The Base Ballers meet
tonight at 8 at the Mechanics' Hall to organize.
June 9th (Montreal Star): The preliminary steps were
taken last night toward the formation of a Base Ball
club in this city. Through the kindness of Mr. Horn
of New York, everything (unreadable) has been
furnished to the club, and that gentleman has
further offered that when 2 or 3 clubs are
organized, he will give a gold or silver ball, the
ball to be considered the emblem of championship of
Canada. The game is a great favorite on the other
side, so much indeed that it's universally
recognized as the National Game. Its simplicity and
attractiveness will render it a formidable rival to
lacrosse.
June 21st (Montreal Star): A resident of New York
promises a silver bat for a Base Ball match between
St.John's and Montreal. The young men of St.John's
can give a good account of themselves at cricket;
how about ball-tossing?
June 23rd (Montreal Star): The Montreal Base Ball
Club meets this evening at the Turf House. The club
is getting along nicely, has a large membership and
has secured grounds for practice.
June 24th (Montreal Star): The Montreal Base Ball
Club had a large and successful meeting last night,
and several new members were elected. The Grand
Duchess Base Ball Club, under the leadership of
Captain Davidge, will play a match with the new
Montreal Base Ball Club in the old cricket ground on
Saturday afternoon at 3.
June 25th (Montreal Gazette): On Wednesday evening,
there was a meeting of the Montreal Club at the Turf
House on McGill street. Some 15 or 20 new members
were proposed and accepted, making the number of
their roll close on 40. The Executive Committee
reported that permission to play on the Dominion
grounds had been obtained, and Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday mornings, at 5 o'clock, were appointed for
practice. From the interest at present shown by the
members, there appears every chance of the game
becoming a popular sport amongst us. The first
practice morning of the above club takes place on
Saturday.
June 28th (Montreal Star): The second base ball
match played this year took place on Saturday
afternoon at the old cricket ground, between the
Montreal and the Grand Duchess Base Ball Clubs. The
latter club is composed of the members of the Holman
Opera troupe. The play could not be called good on
either side, probably owing to the fact that the
match was the first played by this club. Mr. Davidge
acted as captain of the Duchites, while Mr. Atkinson
performed the same duty for the Montrealers. Six
innings were played, at the end of which time was
called, when it was found that the Montreal Club had
won by 10 runs. (Boxscore was included with outs and
runs)
Duchess Club (22): Capt. Davidge (Nepomuc),
W.H. Crane (Gen. Boum), A. Holman (Puck), J.C.
Kenney (Prince Paul), J.E. Smith (Baron Grog), J.H.
Huntley (a soldier), Charles Drew, G. Moon,
Hutchison.
Montreal (32): Capt. Atkinson, Cunningham,
Vosburgh, Ireland, Swain, Robinson, Ryan, McDonald,
Goldie.
Umpire: J. Hamlin. Scorer: A. Mooney.
July 3rd (Montreal Star): The following are the
officers of the St.Lawrence Base-ball Club for the
year: P. Murphy, president; J. Moore,
vice-president; J. Stephenson, Secretary; T. Looney,
Treasurer; W. Fay, Hamelin, Dacy, McNall and
Stephenson, committee. A very interesting match was
played on Wednesday between the St.Lawrence Club and
the St.Mary's Club, composed of the students of
St.Mary's College. Adter a very fine game, the
collegians won by a single run. (Boxscore was
included with outs and runs)
St.Lawrence (21): Catcher W. Fay, Pitcher
Hamelin, SS Dacy, 1B Grissim, 2B Murphy, 3B Looney,
LF O'Donnell, CF Woodfield, RF Stephenson.
St.Mary (22): Catcher Rodgers, Pitcher Flood,
1B Flynn, 2B Gingras, 3B B. Devlin, CF Pinsonnault,
RF Turley, LF Keenan, SS Tomlinson.
July 9th (Montreal Star): The Montreal Base Ball
Club practice night and morning on their grounds at
the head of Durocher Street.
July 12th (Montreal Star): The Montreal Base Ball
Club plays a match with the Grand Duchess (Helman
Opera) one day this week. This is a return to watch.
July 29th (Montreal Star): A match at Base-Ball came
off yesterday afternoon between the Montreal and
St.Lawrence clubs on the grounds of the Montreal
Lacrosse club. The St.Lawrence won by an
overwhelming score of 111 to 30. This augurs ill for
the success of the Montreal club in their
approaching match with Rouse's Point men. The
St.Lawrence batted and caught very well. The
Montreal played poorly and with but little spirit.
The St.Lawrence should have another go at the
St.Mary's Club, with whom they have already had one
closely-contested match. (Boxscore was included with
outs and runs)
St.Lawrence (111): Catcher W. Fay, Pitcher N.
Hamelin, 1B W. Grissim, 2B P. Murphy, 3B A. Mooney,
LF J. O'Donnell, RF T. Jones, SS C. O'Brien, CF J.
Garagan.
Montreal (30): E. Cunningham, N.H. Vosburg,
A. Logan, S.C. Stevenson, B. Eager, W. Ireland, S.
Massey, Newton, S. McDonald.
Umpire: W. Dooley. Scorers: H.
Hamelin, J. Bent.
August 7th (Montreal Star): Rouse's Point 43,
Montreal Base Ball Club 31 (No boxscore).
August 19th (Montreal Gazette): The game is
gradually getting to be very popular amongst our
young men and the Montreal Club, which is composed
of a hardly and athletic set of fellows, are making
great efforts to bring it more before the public.
Their recent challenge to the St.John's Club has
elicited a willing answer and it is decided between
them that the match shall take place on Saturday
afternoon next, on the Montreal Lacrosse ground. As
this is the first opportunity that has offered to
many of our citizens to witness a first class game,
we expect to see the field crowded to judge from
experience whether it equals the more rough and
tumble sport of Lacrosse. We learn that the
St.John's team are in good practice and there
appears to be every chance of a close and exciting
contest.
August 20th (Montreal Star): Our good citizens will
have a chance tomorrow afternoon (the 21st) to
witness a grand base ball match, which is to be
played between the Crescent Club of St.John's PQ and
the Montreal Base Ball Club. From all we can learn,
both clubs are equally sanguine of success, and we
expect some very fine playing. Montrealers are
favorites 2 to 1.
August 22nd (Montreal Star): An International Base
Ball match between Canada and Northern New York is
to be played at Oswego for 500$.
August 23rd (Montreal Star): The St.John's Crescent
Club and the Montreal Club of this city had a
beautiful day for their first friendly match. The
attendance was but fair, but everything passed off
pleasantly. The match resulted in the defeat of the
Montreal Club in nine innings by 12 runs. In the
latter part of the afternoon, a neat dinner was
prepared at the Express Saloon on Bonaventure
street, to which full justice would no doubt have
been done, but that the inexorable conductor would
not wait, and the toasts, which were drank in cold
water, were few and short. A return match will no
doubt soon be played, when it is to be hoped that
our metropolitan youths will return with victory
crowned. (Boxscore was included with outs and runs)
St.John's Crescent (63): Catcher McDonald, SS
Fletcher, 1B McGuire, 3B Donohue, 2B Lanne, CF Roy,
LF Gondreau, RF Lessard, Pitcher Labelle.
Montreal (51): 1B Newton, 3B Vosburgh,
Catcher Atkinson, SS Ryan, 2B McDonald, Pitcher
Logan, RF Robson, LF Cunningham, CF Goldie.
August 27th (Montreal Star): The Montreal Base Ball
Club will shortly play the St.Mary's College Club
for the Horn bat, which is on exhibition at present
in Dawson's window, and they will also play the
Crescent of St.John's their return match in a few
days.
September 1st (Montreal Star): The Montreal Base
Ball Club is, if we credit the Brooklyn Eagle,
shortly to visit New York. However, we doubt it.
September 2nd (Montreal Star): A game of Base Ball
will be played at St.John's, on Saturday 4th,
between the St.Lawrence of Montreal and the Crescent
club of St.John's. A well contested game is
expected.
September 7th (Montreal Star): A game of Base Ball
was played at St.John's on Saturday 4th, between the
St.Lawrence of Montreal and the Crescents of
St.John's, in which the Crescent defeated the
St.Lawrence 69-37. The playing of the Crescent was
very good. McDonald and Hibbard distinguished
themselves. The St.Lawrence lacked in their play,
not having practice lately. Fay and Looney caught
very well. The game lasted 4 hours. In about three
weeks, the St.Lawrence will again test their skill
against the Crescents to attempt to bring back their
lost laurels. (Boxscore was included with outs and
runs)
St.Lawrence (37): Catcher W. Fay, Pitcher
Hamelin, SS C. O'Brien, 1B W. Grissim, 2B T. Jones,
3B T. Looney, LF J. O'Donnell, CF P. Kane, RF T.
Shimer.
St.John (69): Catcher McDonnell, Pitcher
Labelle, SS Monette, 1B Wight, 2B Lamoux, 3B
Hibbard, RF Godneau, CF Roy, LF Sears.
September 18th (Montreal Star): A game of Base Ball
will be played today between the St.Lawrence and
Montreal clubs on the St.Lawrence ground near the
Tannerics. |
